So I’m discovering this #FriFoto sharing on Twitter has a given theme! I start searching for columns, thinking of course I’ll post some dramatic, sun-washed columns from either Seville or Bologna. Then I scan past this photo I snapped last summer, underneath the now extinct Ocean Grove pier in New Jersey…
The sand was hot that day. My friend Esta and I sought refuge for our bare feet in the cool shade offered amongst these pillars. We had earlier strolled the surface of it for sweeping views of the shoreline in both directions. I know this is supposed to be just one photo post, but please indulge me in my happy memories with a dear friend.
Neither this beloved pier nor the famed neighboring boardwalk survived the onslaught of hurricane Sandy, but I imagine the memories of summers spent sifting for treasures, seeking respite from the blazing sun, building sand castles and sneaking kisses amongst these beautiful, aged posts will endure.
I offer this photo in tribute to my wonderful visit to the Jersey shore and Ocean Grove last summer and the people who make it colorful, warm and welcoming. May the best memories bring you healing.
