Today I tagged along while my dear friend, Luisa, and her mom, who is battling breast cancer, created a window display to bring attention to upcoming events for the Breast Cancer Resource Center. A business called Massage Envy in Santa Barbara generously donates their prominent window real estate to various worthy organizations. I, for one, think this is very cool, hence the unsolicited plug ;).
So Luisa and her mom arrived at the location armed with a zany collection of themed bras; from one featuring the very iconic likeness of the Santa Barbara mission on each cup, to a brazier bedecked in glittery aqua sea fans and mermaids, called “Under the C” – yuk yuk.
Funny, even though I have a background in retail and fabulous window vignettes, my greatest contributions were wielding a Windex bottle to clear the view, snapping awful high-glare pictures of the process (grrr) and creatively repairing said mermaids’ missing tail flukes.
At one point, Luisa’s daughter was gawking at her mom and her abuela (“grandmother” in Spanish – yes, Luisa is a lover of all things Spain, too 🙂 ) futzing with flowers and sea shell-smothered bras and I had a pang of sentimental gratitude and yes, a little angst, seeing the three generations of women/girls so important in my life savoring their days. Only a few months back I was lucky enough to attend a fashion show fundraiser for the same center where “Abuela” and her granddaughter stole the show. I am a lucky lady…and I know they all feel their blessings, too, as they embrace the playful and creative moments together. It’s all we can do…it’s all we MUST do.
