My days on the lake continue…
Our first breakfast on “Playtime” , our homey houseboat, was no less than a delectable green chile souffle with fresh salsa, cilantro and bacon brought to you by the good graces of Gretchen, our talented hostesesesess. My favorite coffee beans, Huehuetenango, were also in attendance. We piled into the ski boat, Play Toy, and mozzied on over to West Canyon, where we moored the boat and went for a nice hike and unintentional dips on occasion, where the canyon narrowed and we tried to go farther than common sense dictated. When common sense dictates, I rarely take notes 😉 .
After scrambling down a steep slope of orange sand that was fine as flour, we came upon a 12-15 foot waterfall splashing over a smooth boulder that my friends said is a new addition to the creeks’ path. As I moved to rinse my feet at the base of said cascade, I startled a crawdad (or did he startle me?) and we proceeded to take his picture, of course. The topography of this entire region changes with the levels of the lake. In drought, one can access entire hikes that are normally submerged, and conversely, a higher water line will open up all forms of inlets and canyons to the curious kayaker.
It was a gorgeous day with equally impressive scenery of red sheer cliffs flanking us on our journey and we earned maybe 25% of the dinner that was to come. Dinner, did you say? Yes’m… Gretchen prepared BBQ ribs with a delectable salad and grilled asparagus. Being a sophisticated diner, I had a Mike’s hard lime, and the grown ups had various quality tequilas.
We indulged in a morning kayak, then moved the houseboat. No small feat as it needs to be moored securely and hopefully sheltered from any inclement weather. We earned a brunch of mmm homemade waffles, fresh strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream, compliments of Connie. I am deciding I really like her! We visited the convenience market at the Dangling Rope dock to buy soft serve ice cream, and more emergency supplies – namely, marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers. Toothy grin here 😀 Dinner of – get this – crab cakes (best I’ve EVER had) with wasabi mayonnaise and a light asian slaw… downright decadent. THEN, we sat around a campfire at our newest home mooring and indulged in s’mores… mmm. Are they even good? Or is it pure nostalgia? I choose to stop analyzing; I like the experience, so I’m going with my initial reaction of mmm. Oh my – I need to hike!
